Hafez al Assad, a member of the Alewite minority and leader of the Ba'athist
Party, took power in Syria in 1970, and ruled until his death in the year 2000.
His son, Basheer, took over the presidency, when Hafez died.
What makes that unusual is that three out of four Syrians are Sunni Muslims,
and only 10% are Alewites (a Shia sect).
Eventually, the majority get tired of having a minority group running the show,
and taking all of the advantages for themselves.
With the help of other Sunni nations in the area, the majority have risen up
against al-Assad, and eventually will throw him onto the garbage heap of history.
