Osama bin Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden (al-Qahtani), was born and raised in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Translated, his name means "Osama, son of Mohammed (his father), son of Awad (his grandfather), son of Laden (a distant ancester)".
His hereditary surname was "al-Qahtani", but his father never officially registered this part of his name.
He moved to Pakistan in 1979, and then went to Afghanistan to fight with the Mujahideen against the Soviet Union.
When this war ended he commuted between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Afghanistan, but resided in Saudi.
In 1992 he was banished by Saudi Arabia because of his relentless criticism of their government.
He went into exile in Sudan, where he lived until 1996, when he moved back to Afghanistan.
It is not known exactly where he lived in Afghanistan, or when he moved out of that country, it is thought he was continuously on the move in order to evade US surveillance.
It is believed that some time in 2003 or 2004, he bought the house in Abbottabad, Pakistan where he was eventually traced and killed.
Considerable work was done on the property before 2005, to increase the privacy for it's occupants, these include the very high walled compound.
