What happened to Amstrad?

Amstrad had a good idea then a company called Tandy came along and overnight Amstrad disappeared as it could not compete with the American brand .

Britain may have been leading the home computers market, but that was probably around 1982/3 - Amstrad only ever made a very limited range of home computers, and to be honest they never really gained much of a market share. Amstrad eventually bought out the Sinclair Spectrum brand, but by the time they did this, the Spectrum was pretty much past its prime anyway.

didn't they buy a load of duff american hard drives, that basically killed the brand off, fundamentally not developing software that led to the GUI revolution, left our industry standing, I know making a kernel is a hell of a development investment, way beyond either acorn or amstrad, but the state could have chipped in huh.. that's what we have bloody universities for.. oh for an MIT not pompous oxbridge, dreaming spires butter no parsnips..

all i have to say on this matter for the moment..

I mean for lambs sake, anyone with half a brian could see the command line was going to be replaced with graphics.. we should have invested..

Alan Michael Sugar Trading (Amstrad) I see they are still trading. I did not like to give a link for fear someone would see it as advertising.

I don't think so Bill Gates has always been very big in computers - he didn't invent them but he made loads of money - Alan sugar's company was a downmarket kind of company

Even back in the day they were guff Spectrum and commodore kicked their asses

amstrad products were junk

In 1986 Britain was leading the computer age and Alan Sugar was worth 2.5 times what Bill Gates was worth in 1986, so what happened.

Why isn't amstrad still making computers and how did America take over?
