I think it was caused by a weather phenomenon known as El Nino(Spanish, meaning the Christ Child). It's an irregular climatic change in the Pacific Ocean. Occurring every few years off the coast of Peru, very warm water is pulled by wind action towards Australia, resulting in very heavy rainfall. Hope this helps.
