There would be wall to wall coverage. The conspiracy theorists would come out before the day was over. Memorials would be being posted all over mass media sites like Facebook and Twitter.
The stock market would likely drop. Football would still be played (with flags lowered at half mast and a moment of silence before the game). The shooter would be protected better so he would not shot on national tv but his trial might be on Court TV.Then he would be given the death penalty and sent to death row.
The shock of the country thought would be just as great.
If they could stop showing viral videos of runaway cars and exploding gas pumps, they'd turn it into a media circus, fueling citizens' hatred, suspicion and fear of their fellow citizens... because that's what sells these days.
Considering how much the people have been lied to and looked down on by their leaders I don't think many would care.
They'd blame the Tea Party until it turned out that the killer was apolitical then blame them anyway.
Back in 1963, they didn't have mass media. Today, if JFK were assassinated, what would it be like to be a person at home watching (or reading the news online off Twitter, news websites, etc)? How intense would the coverage be? Would it surpass 9/11? How about football this coming Sunday? would people show up? What would happen to the stock market?
Would the country finally unite? A lot of questions, I know. But I have been thinking about this all day and it would be interesting to hear some other opinions, especially those of you who were around back then.
