History questions no one knows the answer to?

I need a specific question that has to do with world history that no one knows the answer to.

Winding its way through the islands of Canada's Far North, the Northwest Passage is a fabled sea route through the Arctic ocean.

In the 1800s, it was the subject of intense competition between explorers seeking shortcuts between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to be used as trade routes linking Europe and Asia.

In 1845, a famous explorer named Sir John Franklin set sail from Britain with two ships, the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror.

They were never heard from again, and the mystery of their disappearance has obsessed people from all over the world ever since.

Especially in Canada, where it's been the subject of everything from folk songs to the current Canadian Prime Minister personally joining the search for the remains of the doomed Franklin Expedition.
