Did the Vietname War actually do anything?

1. It drained American strategic reserves (both militarily and financially) making it appear as if the Soviet Union was surging relative to the United States (all power is relative). This prompted the Americans to reach out to the Chinese to counterbalance the Russians.

2. It directly led to the Nixon Doctrine which says the United States will not directly engage in ground wars in Asia, but will supply air support, naval power, and strategic support to back allies in the region. This new strategy is still in use today because it leverages our capital advantage while negating our disadvantage in the cost of labor (economics applies even in war planning).

3. It led to the creation of the all volunteer army because military planners realized that to successfully wage disruptive wars in Eurasia in the future they would need to minimize casualties to maintain public support. The political and social ramifications are widespread, and I don't think we even fully perceive them all to this day.

4. 18 year olds gained the right to vote based on the argument that if they were old enough to be drafted to go die in Vietnam then they were old enough to vote.

There are more than that, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head right now. Oh... it also led to doctrinal changes in the way all branches of the arms services operate. Anyway, you could go on and on and on....

It kept communists from taking Southeast Asia for two decades after the French retreat from Indochina - Vietnam. When we left, Pol Pot, and Ho Chi Minh murdered one million people in the killing fields of Cambodia. We should still be there, instead of allowing those deaths to happen. We prevented similar atrocities by remaining in Korea for sixty years. You don't turn your back on free people, because they happen to be poor farmers of a different race.

it made Americans look bias, weak and cold hearted killers..but what happend to Vietnam afterwards was great for Vietnam.. because of America pulling that dumb stunt, Vietnam is one of the fastest growing economies in Asia... Americas failed war made Vietnam a better place today...so next time you see a Vietnam vet with his silly hat on, just spit in his face and call his azz stupid and a proud loser! do not praise Vietnam vets unless it's a Ex Vietcong soldier.

the war was to protect america's vital interests in vietnam . which at the time was an american firm had a million dollar contract to dredge hai phong harbor . that averages to about $ 19 dollars each for the 53,000 americans who died there .

It let the communists take over the whole country.
