How many Australians would change...?

I am of partial British descent, but should we become a republic I wouldn't want the Union Jack on the flag anymore. It would represent something that isn't really true about modern Australia.

On the whole "if you don't like it leave" thing, I don't really buy into that. There is a big difference between being hateful or disrespectful of your country and having a desire that it grow to be the best place it can be and a political and cultural entity in its own right. As a fifth generation Australian I can honestly say that I am something of a minority here, but that doesn't stop me from looking to the future rather than clutching onto some long dead imperialist past.

Every time the republican debate comes up the issue of the flag raises its head the trouble is that there have been a number of attempts to become a republic and they have all failed miserably as has the issue of the flag .

The problem for most is that yes some want a new flag but the majority use the historic links of the past and how many Australians fought and died for that flag and it all goes quiet for a while .

These particular Ausies probably weren't of British descent,

Ausies of other nationalities obviously wont feel the pull of the flag

the same way.

If some one of greek origin were to choose between having the Greek

flag on it or the Aborigine, you would get a different answer again.

When they go and fight in a war under that flag they can have an opinion. We seem to be caring way too much what the imports think. All that cr@p about ANZAC Day was just plain bullsh1t

If you don't like our flag then pack your bags and F Off

the flag and not have the Union Jack in it? I ask because I was watching something on television the other day and heard a few Australians mention that they would rather have the flag of the Aborigines in place of the Union Jack.
