They made cupcakes and decorated them, and we ate them at recess
They got me jewellry and a dress, of course dresses are hard to but for people because they didnt know my size.
I would maybe tell them jewelly? It really depends on what you are into. Maybe perfume? or Crafty stuff? or a photo frame that says 'friends' or something

My friends birthday is in november and I'm planning on taking her on a shopping spree! She's off to New York in December so she's always moaning that she has no clothes as she has to safe all her money for NY so im planning to save about 30 to 50 pounds to take her on a day out, buy a item of clothing she loves and get her some dinner!
It abits rude to ask your friend for a shopping spree, but why not askf ro something abit more sentimental. These options ar enormally cheaper too.

Why not just go on a nice day out together? She can prepare a picnic or something and just go out the two of yous, get a camera and take pictures of your memories! Have fun, have a giggle and just be the two best friends you are! A birthday presant doesn't have to be a peice of material in your hands, but could be a memory that you will treasure forever <3 <3
If you are stressing out about such a minor thing now, God help you when you have children, and are responsible for paying all the bills.
Chill out girl, and just be really happy to celebrate your birthday, whatever comes.

dont worry about consumerism, every one needs something on their birthday, watch you dont get a piece of junk you later realise you dont need, like most junk, something like a laptop i phone or kindle are all expencive but can keep giving, as you can watch things or play things wheres a dvd or music could be downloaded with said thing...how about an opertunity of some kind, my sisters chose to do a little horse riding or surfing instead of a gift i always wanted a picnic and family gathering on a beach
i need to go to the zoo thinking about it, moving to london makes me want to be near animals and running water
Say to your friend, 'you choose me something, because I really like surprises'. Then make sure when you do get it, you are really happy (even if you have to pretend a bit!) It's always nice to get a present and I am sure if she is your friend she will choose something nice.
For my best friends birthday she asked for something 'unique and thoughtful' so i got a giant photo frame and filled it with pictures of us from when we were 6 up untill her birthday, she loved it and now its hung on her bedroom wall. :)
