I have my theory and I stick by it which is "Cassie" is really Cassie Newman alive and in the flesh, she just doesn't know it.
How is she alive? Simple, Ian Ward has been lurking around GC for years and wanting payback on Nikki but using her family to do it, what better way to do it then make the Newmans believe Cassie has died? He had some of his "followers" come in and carry Cassie out of the hospital bed and take her to a secluded dungeon/room where she was kept in a coma, When she woke up she was given ECT to make her forget that she was "Cassie Newman", she was renamed "Mariah" and Ian Ward convinced her that Sharon abandonded her and she came to town to get revenge.
However she met Tyler along the way and they fell for each other, her plans got sidetracked and she started making a life with him but things ended badly.

Well anything is possible and I will go out on a limb and say I bet she is Mariah. Not sure if she is the real Cassie since we all saw her die when she was a young girl.
