George R.R. Martin is considered to be a modern, American Tolkien by some. It's probably because of the extensive world created by the writer and depth of the character's story lines. Personally, I think it's on the same level as Tolkien's work.
It has a more complex set of stories. Lord of the Rings might be a great story, but at this point it has been done in a lot of books and the whole Evil Overlord bit is rather stale.
Martin is a breath of fresh air in fantasy literature.
It has a great story and at least a sex scene in every episode :)
