Most likely he needs no punishment. Being captured is not a crime. Even not being a very good soldier [which he may or may not be, I do not know] does not mean he should not be rescued.
Have you seen the movie "Saving Private Ryan"? It is the story of a group sent to bring back a soldier whose 3 brothers died in combat; most of the men are killed, but Private Ryan is saved, and keeps the memory of those who died to save him. Of course Private Ryan is not the only important thing. On this mission they make other valuable contributions to the war effort. War is like that. It is chaotic, but there is a noble fight against the chaos too.
I am sure Bergdahl did not have much fun with the Taliban anyway.
