TV Shows:
1. BBC's Sherlock (Brilliant. Simple as that.)
2. Doctor Who (I have only watched the first season so far, but I can tell it's going to be a favorite very soon.)
3. Alphas (very short live Syfy series. Only lasted two seasons...and the ending would probably make you mad. Good show though.)
4. Bones (It's a crime dramedy, so there is some blood and gross things, but it's usually not bad. Normally only on screen for maybe a minute, maybe two at most.)
Movies (If you like really random, [mostly] independent type films):
1. TiMER
2. The Pill
3. Tonight You're Mine
4. Pirate Radio (not sure if it's on Netflix, but if it is, definitely worth a watch.)
5. Midnight in Paris (same as Pirate Radio)
6. Kill Your Darlings (not sure about this one either, but worth the look.)
If I think of more, I will edit my answer.
I'm not sure of your question. If "any kind would work", then just grab the remote and try anything, but if you "have nothing", then how are you going to watch anything anyone recommends? Otherwise, I agree with Larkin and Michael's recommendations.
Doctor Who! its a british tv show, but if you watch the episode season 1 episode1, "Rose", and the season 5, the eleventh hour, you'll gonna love it. Netflix got me addicted to it, and now its my favorite show ever!
