I am expecting a nuclear device to be detonated in at least one major USA or UK city in the near future and the London Olympics provide a very likely venue with Washington and New York being close to the top of the list also . I read Physics amongst other subjects at Cambridge University and am an MA and Senate member of that body . By chance , as an undergraduate , I attended the same Cambridge College contemporaneously with "C" , the former head of MI6 . I have put my university website email address in my profile to evidence my qualifications . I shall make the following blunt statement and go on to justify it.
A fully functional atomic device of the size and yield of that dropped on Hiroshima may be built in a matter of weeks from openly obtainable materials in either the UK or USA at a cost of 500 pounds sterling . The resulting chain reaction may be "initiated" using a device powered by the mains .
Most people are aware that for sustained fission a "Chain reaction" is required and that if this is achieved using fission neutrons alone a "Critical Mass" of fantastically expensive Plutonium or Uranium 235 is needed . This is so if fission neutrons ALONE are used . However, you are probably aware that a massive amount of high energy Gamma Radiation is also released in fission . What you probably do not know is that these discrete Gamma photons may be used in a PROCESS known as Photodisintegration which along with the fission neutrons will sustain the chain reaction without the need for a critical mass of Isotopic material . In fact , only a very small amount of naturally occurring Uranium is required and this may be obtained anywhere .
Hence any third world nation , rebel army and criminal or terrorist gang can build a fully functioning neutron weapon and Hiroshima sized bomb for 500 pounds sterling if the PROCESS and Geometry are known . We really are on the brink of the ABYSS .

No, it's not going to happen.
First of all, things like nuclear bombs aren't just strewn about carelessly, nor can you simply pop down to the local Army Surplus store and pick one up. The countries that have them are all very careful to keep a very close eye on them.
Second, they aren't easy to build. The crucial materials needed are very carefully monitored, and as you've seen with Iran and N. Korea, anyone attempting to build one now a days comes under intense scrutiny. Even making your own bomb-ready materials from scratch would require a lot of resources, not to mention several entire nuclear power plants. This isn't something a couple of terrorists could build in their backyard without anyone knowing about it.
Third, they aren't particularly easy to transport. Even a small nuclear warhead is going to be the size of a large casket. A large, radioactive, casket. This isn't something you're going to be able to casually take to the airport as checked luggage, or toss on a boat for a leisurely cruise.
Finally, what would be the point of a broad attack on the Olympics like this? Yes there was a terrorist attack at the Olympics some 50 years ago, but it was targeted against Israel and had a specific purpose. 9/11 was horrific and killed a lot of people but again, in the terrorists' minds it was a targeted attack against the US government and what they felt were symbols of our democracy and capitalism. My point is that terrorists don't go around killing people for no reason. Furthermore, a broad attack against the Olympics that would affect all of the participating nations would serve no purpose. It certainly would do nothing to help convince any government to change any of its policies. Such an attack would carry a message of, what, exactly? Anarchy? Chaos? Violence? Those are hardly political statements any government would embrace.
No, if such an attack were to occur, it would only result in unifying the entire world - including nations like N. Korea and Iran - against terrorism. If you think the US' war on terror has been a bloody mess, I daresay the way Iran, for instance, would attack terrorism would make the US look like Mary Poppins.
