According to one witness, (remember 'one witness), he went into a room and a shot was heard, he was then seen slumped to one side with blood on his head. Was he dead? we do not know. Was his wife Eva Braun dead? we do not know. His body was then manhandled outside the Bunker and burned on the ground with his wife. Was it his body that was burned? we do not know. Was a switch made, and Mr Hitler, very much alive left the Bunker by one of the many tunnels while a dead body was burned? we just do not know.
Witnesses claimed to have seen him stepping from an aircraft in Spain where he then made his way, with his wife, to a submarine that took him to Argentina. J Edgar Hoover never believed Mr Hitler died in Berlin and issued instructions for FBI staff to 'be aware' of any sightings of him years after the war. According to some accounts he lived for over ten years in a remote Argentine village.

The commonly accepted theory is that he shot himself. There was a rumour that the SS shot him before attempting a breakout of the bunker.
