He was determined not to be taken alive.
He had already killed 4 people who hadn't done anything to him; and injured more. He knew he would never be able to clear his name of these crimes.
There have been news reports that Dorner shot himself in the head. When a persons only options are being burned alive or shooting themselves, most are going to shoot themselves.
