The information he published was exactly like the information Assange published can be accessed from the many Information Clearing Houses available on the Net.
The data is there for all to view, should you want to look.
The NSA was exposed as having spied on the German Chancellor (was she going to announce the Fourth Reich and resume the drang nach Osten?), the French President (was he about to demand the return of Louisiana?) and the President of Brazil (Mardi Gras as terrorism?). But they had no clue about Putin invading Ukraine. Further, the Congressional Budget Office found that only once has NSA ever warned of a real terror attack, and in that case its information was useless because other agencies had it.
Against the above, NSA missed the 1993 WTC bomb, 9/11, Boston Marathon, Lockerbie, Benghazi, Beirut Marine barracks bomb, bombs of our embassies in Tanzania and Kenya, shoe bomber, Times Square car bomb, Mumbai mall massacre, etc. etc.
Snowden revealed an anti-American conspiracy nested in the government, and is a national hero. I dare say the NSA is a pack of traitors, and should get the traditional punishment for everyone associated with it or defending it
As you say in a free society there should be little to leak excepting stuff that is the GOVERNMENTS duty to SECURE; if the above mentioned person did leak sensitive stuff then surely it is the government that is to blame for they have failed in their duty of care and should be hauled over the coals for their laxity.
If however the authorities are up in arms because what has been exposed is just troubling them because it is stuff that should be free and available but been kept away because it shows mismanagement of public funding then when the case comes to court the people should set the guy free and reward him for his troubles and long detention.

I have enjoyed following this case. From everything I have read, Edward Snowden seems to have done the right thing. If the US wasn't doing wrong in the first place and keeping secrets from the public about the land they live in, there would have been nothing to 'leak'. I understand there are certain things the government doesn't tell us but they have no right to hide 90% of the stuff they do.
I think what he did was absolutely right. It was is duty to protect the american citizens, and to expose what the NSA did and how they did spy on everyone in the world. We need more men like you.
