If smoking was brand new & was introduced now it definitely would be illegal. That's if it could be brand new & we could still have all the knowledge of the health risks that go with it, lol.
The trouble is governments make so much money from TAX on cigarettes that they're not going to kill that particular golden goose. So they just stop you smoking in certain places, but still let you buy tobacco.
If you were wanting to make smoking illegal you could use the same arguments for making alcohol illegal. Cannabis already is illegal, & all cannabis is is stuff to smoke that has an effect similar to alcohol.
If it was health grounds for making stuff illegal you could, having got rid of cigarettes & alcohol, then get rid of sweets & fatty foods. The problem is many of these things are only a problem if used in excess, or if used antisocially.

In fact, smoke and cigarette butts affect our environment the most resulting in land, air, and water pollution. Even the production of making cigarettes affects the environment. Some smokers are unaware of smoking polluting the environment. Smokers are actually one of the direct contributors to environmental pollution. They breathe in about 4000 chemicals from the cigarette, and then breathed out into our environment. Think about it. That’s 4000 chemicals into our environment that doesn’t need to be there. If we all stop smoking, those 4000 chemicals will no longer be in the environment.
The production of making cigarettes has a very big affect on our environment. Instead of using the land to grow tobacco, we could be using that land to grow food for the third world countries in the Middle East and Africa. Plus, tobacco plants sometimes carry pests and diseases, so tobacco farmers spray different chemicals on the plants to kill the pests and diseases. These sprays can be very harmful to the environment.
The cigarettes are packaged and rolled in lots paper. This means that lots of trees are being torn down to make a product that will just destroy the environment even more. That’s a lose–lose situation. Trees are being wasted!! Fact is it takes one tree to produce 300 cigarettes.
Some cigarettes take 18 months to 10 years to biodegrade, and some may never biodegrade. Think about what’s that doing to our environment! Did you know that worldwide, 2.1 billion pounds of garbage each year is generated from cigarette filters?! That’s a lot!

My dad had a heart attack because of smoking, and he quit right after that. Also, my grandfather got over it, and now his lung is messed up. So, it should be banned because people are just hurting themselves. And who would let people do that? Also, they are wasting all of their money on smoking.
Smokers can smoke all they want if they were only harming themselves. But this is not true. Smoking not only affects the smoker but other people and the environment as well
I support people being able to do whatever they want to their own bodies, granted it's not effecting anyone else who isn't a willing participant. So I think there should be certain places where it's permitted and also where it's prohibited. Just like you feel a certain violation by your mother smoking around you (while you're still a minority, which is a mother's choice), smokers would also feel that same violation if it was made illegal.
Your problem with your Mother is a personal one. Talk with her, maybe? Or if you feel it is out of hand, you could also give DCF a call.
If they make cigarettes illegal why not just make big mac's illegal? I see so many big fatso's eating the most unhealthy garbage all the time. Cigarettes are an appetite suppressant. It's safer for your heart to smoke a cigarette instead of eating that greasy food.
Hypothetically, it would be wonderful if smoking were illegal. But on the other hand, then people would try to get cigarettes like the people in Prohibition got liquor.

thank god smoking isn't allowed in restaurant and bars here. but those smoke rooms at the office are also nasty, everytime I have to pass by the doors even if it's closed, I have to hold my breath.

yes they will keep selling it, why because it is money not only for the ones who are selling it but also big bucks for the medicine department. yes who ever owns license for medical equipments and medicine etc. make money when some gets cancer etc. yes and health insurance so annoying and expensive, paying even if you are not sick...pfff.

Yes. People with an addiction or just support smokers say people should worry about themselves and they can do whatever thu want with them selves. People that do not support smoking are in fact worrying about them selves 1.no one likes smelling smoke everywhere around them. And 2. People around smokers can develoup lung problems by merely being around it. People are compassionate and do not want to see people they care about get cancer lung problems etc. smoking is dangerous therefore it should be illegal

I am aware that people have the right to smoke, but I'm just thinking hypothetically. If all other addictive drugs (cannabis and opium that are smoked) are illegal why not ciggarretes? Cigarettes have similar addictive qualities to that of other drugs. I am a non-smoker living in a house with a former smoker and a current smoker. I'm 15 and if every American has three inaliable rights (life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness) I feel like my mother's smoking is impeaching on my right of life. Second hand smoke contributes to 50,000 deaths per year in America. Since smoking is illegal in public vicinities, I feel like it should be banned and illegal in all aspects. Not only is smoking a negative impacted on the environment and over all human health, it is a huge economical problem as well. Sometimes my mother will buy her cigarrettes and not certain foods. It's always "We can't get that because I still have to buy cigarrettes." It's not fair to me and the rest of my family. She won't even compromise with us and smoke outside. It's even hard to breath sometimes in my house. Why hasn't someone sued over this? It's not right.

Cigarette companys pay the goverment to keep smoking cigarettes legal that is why that's legal. I think people can somke if they want but second hand somke is a problem
