No need at all to go the library to find out about the United States of America and its independence day. You can find all the information you need online.
First of all, "America" actually would refer to the complete Americas, being North and South. The northern half of North America is sparsely populated and covered mostly by Canada, except for the northwestern portion which is occupied by Alaska, the largest state of the U.S. The central and southern portions of the continent are represented by the United States, Mexico, and numerous smaller states primarily in Central America and in the Caribbean.
So the United States of America is not America, but just a part of North America. You can read all about the USA and its history here.

Then finally about Independence Day. Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. See link for more information about Independence Day.
