Yes, AHS uses classic horror-settings, and the Sideshow originally was a secondary show travelling with the Circus, it usually featured a Strong-Man, a Bearded-Lady, Fortune Tellers, Sword-Swallowers, Blood-Acts, Siamese-Twins, Elephant-Men, and other 'freaks', and 'geeks'(normal people doing freak-behaviors), hence the word Freak-Show.
It's perfect for Horror of course, since even the real Freak-Shows are shady, have misfits joining them, and often provide shocking, frightening entertainment.
Sure. I didn't watch American Horror Story until last season ("Coven"), and then I HAD to watch the other two seasons. This really is a 'horror' story that you will get into. The writing and the acting is second only to "The Walking Dead".
